Sales of color camera phones dominate

GfK Asia released its 2006 Mid- Year Pan Asian Mobile Phone and Digital Imaging summary which shows retail sales of color camera phones continued to dominate the mobile phone market across the 11 countries assessed across the region* in the first half of 2006.

Of the three categories assessed in the Asian region -- color with camera, color displays without camera, and monochrome -- color camera phones reported an overall increase of approximately 55% in volume, with just under 55 million units sold, and 33% increase in value, totaling over US$14 billion in sales from January to June 2006. Total Asian market phone sales for the region were up by approximately 36% in volume during the first six months of 2006 against the same time period in 2005, with just over 107 million units sold.

While China still holds the lion's share in Asia in terms of overall mobile phone sales volume and value, with 53 million units sold in the first six months of 2006 and over US$9 billion in retail mobile phone sales during the same timeframe; India's first-half of the year demonstrated the most dramatic growth of all countries surveyed. Within the color camera phone category, India reported a growth rate of 296% in volume and 239% in value from January to June 2006 compared with the first half of 2005, more than tripling China's 70% volume and 43% value growth rate posted in these results.

The regions' digital imaging market showed China, once again, in the overall lead, with a total volume of more than 3 million units sold and more than US$1 billion in sales for both Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) and compact digital cameras in the first half of 2006. In comparison, no other country out of those surveyed* in Pan Asia broke the million in volume unit or billion dollar mark in sales so far this year. Australia (734,000 units / US$226 million), Hong Kong (563,000 units / US$223 million), Taiwan (435,000 units / US$167.6 million), and Korea (397,000 units / US$173 million) followed the closest behind for overall units and US$ sold for these two categories from January to June 2006.

* Data for mobile phone sales from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and the Philippines.
